Last month, my mum (of which I have three, I know I’m lucky) and I booked an appointment to reach the Maria Tash pop-up, at The Bay, Queen street. What started off as me ‘accompanying’ her ended in three piercings each. We left feeling elated and refreshed with similar-placed, mother-daughter piercings.
Shout out to my mum for finding the pop-up. She’d been doin’ a little research and to be honest I had never heard of Maria Tash before we booked our appointments. We both quickly became effing giddy with excitement as we looked up her jewellery, ogling images, collecting ideas of what we had in mind.
Upon arrival, we were met with the sad news that neither of us would be able to get the hoop Rook piercings we had our hearts set on. A little disappointed, we looked at other options. I already had my mind made up on what I wanted, so looking for a ‘second best’ to me seemed pointless. I was kind of ready to scrap the idea all together, when a smiling tatted man approaches from behind the counter.
Enter Kevin the Piercer. More like Kevin the wizard. Disclaimer, I’m not easily impressed. He swoops in, and straight up tells us the placement of the ‘hearts desire’ piercing isn’t going to work. If we do it, it may not heal the way we had hoped because of the natural and specific curve of the our ‘rook’ cartilage area.
I am a sucker for honesty.
He asks if he can suggest something. He places a few dots on our ears to display his carefully thought out master plan. And a master plan it is.
Neither of us could have been happier. I can’t even remember what the fuck I wanted in the first place. That’s saying a lot…
For anyone else utterly confused by Ear Piercing terminology, I’ve created a lil diagram for clarification. I have become somewhat familiar with these terms after having scoured the internet for examples of piercing placements. See exhibit A, below 🙂
